Ski rétro: the new Women’s F/W 2017-18 collection by Alberto Guardiani

If the Italian shoe industry is in trouble (please see our article The Italian footwear industry) the same can not be said for the brand Alberto Guardiani which is in the lucky and farsighted 23% of companies growing.

Just this week was presented the new women’s Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection, inspired by vintage aesthetics to draw a universe of innovative and ultraoriginal accessories.

A footwear wardrobe that projects a metropolitan, après-ski image, complemented by a functional array of accessories with a strong personality, for women who aren’t afraid to go for a more unconventional look.

Guardiani’s muse is a determined yet bubbly, ironic and demanding woman: a complex, multi-faceted personality, perfectly expressing the zeitgeist of the contemporary world.

Perfectly in theme with this mood, the Autumn/Winter 2017-18 Collection combines a variegated array of inspirations.
In fact, while on one side it’s influenced by the current macro-trends, it’s also a wink to athleisure and a celebration of 70s revival, but still remains faithful to the fashion house’s DNA, embodied in the impeccable artisanal workmanship, the careful study and selection of the materials and obsessive attention to detail.

All this, without betraying the more practical design elements and the constant search for complete, 24/7 functionality: an element that is becoming increasingly indispensable for the modern-day woman.
This unedited combination of design elements is expressed in an audacious and appealing design, which coordinates retro and avant-garde references in striking and unexpected combinations.
The originality of the collection shines through in the choice of materials. Unusual materials that are full of character, like sheepskin, ponyskin and decisively tactile fabrics and effects (lurex and multi-coloured wool, but also 3D-effect stitch detailing), are alternated with the great classics of the leather industry, like calf and brushed leather, in a distinctive array of edgy and surprising combinations.

The sheepskin, for example, is a key protagonist of the season: combined with black calf in a variety of lively hues, it becomes the unexpected feature on sandals and clogs, but also finds its place on boots, sneakers and lace-ups. With its unmistakable appearance and vibrant colour tones, its perfect for facing those cold winter days with a relaxed, bohemian-inspired style that also winks an eye at the coolest trends of the moment.
Another star material in the Autumn/Winter collection has a funkier spirit: printed ponyskin, which is proposed in two spotted versions (micro and macro) in a wide variety of colour combinations. The frayed black lurex strikingly offsets the material, creating a highly glamorous look that gives slip-ons, lace-ups and high top sneakers an unmistakable finish.

For those in search of a more understated but by no means less refined style, there’s the special, woven technical fabric, embellished with micro-stitch accents that create a 3D-effect pyramid motif. This exclusive material, available in bronze or gun-metal grey, is coordinated with brushed calf to create a truly pleasing contrast.

Whereas, the two-colour, melange wool fabric, is a key feature in the sportier designs, which combined with the patent and calf accents, adds a decisively dressy and versatile appeal to the footwear.
The alternation of the most varied leathers and materials can be seen across the collection and is constantly enhanced by a sapient use of colour. A rich and varied colour palette, where classic winter shades like black, brown and bordeaux are contrasted by energetic tones that are not usually seen in the winter season, like mustard, bright orange and fresh, creamy white.

Even the constructions reflect the multifunctional and eclectic inclination of the collection, starting with One, the top new addition to the collection.

The perfect fusion of active and dressy, One is not a performance sneaker but a design sneaker, with a decisively boyish attitude. The sole of this technical running shoe is composed of three elements and features an embossed Alberto Guardiani logo on the tread. The upper is essential but features meticulous attention to detail: from the stitched, calf toe cap to the elastic strap, which transforms the shoe into a practical slip-on. Available in an unedited array of combinations, like melange wool and patent or pony and lurex, this versatile and appealing design has all the cards up its sleeve for making any look stand out from the crowd.
Another novelty is Ivy, a brushed calf leather lace-up with a masculine attitude. But don’t be deceived by the minimal, slightly squared lines and characteristic ‘duck-bill’ toe, because the construction is uber-sophisticated. In fact, it features a layered sole, alternated with a leather welt; a midsole in micro-porous fabric; a second midsole in leather (which matches the leather on the heel), and a lug tread, created using a sophisticated injection process.

Whereas, the High England models combine a two-tone lug sole with a more whimsical upper. There’s the brushed leather Derby model, embellished with a sheepskin or fabric strap and a cage construction, which recalls vintage ski boots, upgraded with a striking combination of calf and sheepskin in contrasting shades.

The new version of the iconic Holly design, with its wedge sole and over-sized heel, has also been given an upgrade: sandals are now covered in soft sheepskin, becoming a must-have statement piece for the Autumn/Winter season. There is also a new, Seventies-inspired, Beatles boot in brushed calf leather and suede. And there’s also the latest seasonal variation of the sandal, which comes with a functional closed toe.

With its solid, structured lines, Utopya has also been revamped: the new 2017 Autumn/Winter model is a clog with a sheepskin edging, which turns this practical design into a real statement piece.

Ginger, an iconic design with a high, ultra-light, contrasting micro-wedge sole now also comes in the lace-up ankle boot version, which recalls the after-ski look of yesteryear, whereas the classic model has taken on a sportier tone, thanks to a careful study of the details.
